What exactly is behavioural coaching, and even more importantly what are we exactly defining when we talk about behaviours, motivation etc.?

Behaviours are happening all the time, like breathing. We don’t even notice most of our behaviours, mainly because we are so occupied in reacting to other people’s! It is usually the behaviours of others which we want to change in corporations, very rarely our own. Again, when talking about leadership behaviours, they are often logged down as competencies, added to which there is a disparity between behaviours and values. These intangibles are the most difficult to get hold of, but we know that they are the most important thing in our business.

Most of our time at work and in life is spent in dealing with other people, what they say, how they say it, the things they do and the way they do them. Usually it is how it personally affects us which determines the way we intend to behave to others.

In corporate life, a lot is made of surviving corporate politics ­ as a former outplacement director, I found that many redundancies were made on the basis of the abilities of the individuals politically, and at senior level, the ability to relate to people and behave ‘appropriately’ was paramount. This leads to the question of just what it is that makes one person more able to manage people and situations than another, when perhaps both their levels of competency are the same.

Workplace Shadowing/Coaching

Just as a sports person needs a coach to help them improve whilst they are performing, the same can be applied to an executive. We provide an observer on a 360 degree basis ­ which involves watching an executive working on internal meetings with peers, subordinates and upline, and also watching external meetings if applicable. This gives an insight into time management, communication skills, impact on others, others’ impact on the executive. Invaluable information to build a coaching programme which is tailor made to the individual.
